1 bottle white Karo
2 c. granulated sugar
1 tall can milk
1/4 lb. margarine, cut into pieces
little salt
1 t. vanilla
Cook Karo and sugar to soft ball, stirring.
Add separately: tall can milk, margarine (cut into pieces) and little salt
Continue boiling, stirring constantly.
Cook until it forms a firm ball in cold water.
Remove from heat when testing.
When done add 1 t. vanilla.
Pour into greased square pan.
Let stand several hours or overnight.
Remove from pan.
Cut into squares.
Wrap in wax paper.
Nuts may be added.
For chocolate caramels, melt 3 sq. unsweetened chocolate in sauce pan, then proceed as above.
This is the recipe Grandmother gave me. I was the very happy recipient of these hand-wrapped little squares of bliss every summer while at camp in Wisconsin. If you ever try making them, you will see they are truly a gift of LOVE!
